First , Zig-Zags, Triangles, and other easy patterns that can greatly enhance yo ur musicality and freedom, for novice and advanced player alike. We'll exp lore clear-cut methods of breaking away from playing specific known notes (like F# or A) and working more from the actual shapes on the dulcimer its elf --- handy for developing fresh chord patterns and accompaniment rhythm s, but also amazing for free improvisation that can make your playing soun d so good even without thinking, that listeners may be thrilled an applaud --- really! Several pdf handouts will be provided. Second, Christmas Repe rtoire --- We'll focus on five special Christmas pieces: The only three ac tual Christmas shape-note hymns and some ideas for how to play them on ham mered dulcimer or other instruments; and the two beautiful but repetitious melodies "We Three Kings" and "The First Noel" and how I have "solved the puzzles" of making them into intriguing dulcimer solos.
