Description:

Timothy will be presenting two workshops, an hour and a half each, on the hammered dulcimer! First, Zig-Zags, Triangles, and other easy patterns that can greatly enhance your musicality and freedom, for novice and advanced player alike. We'll explore clear-cut methods of breaking away from playing specific known notes (like F# or A) and working more from the actual shapes on the dulcimer itself --- handy for developing fresh chord patterns and accompaniment rhythms, but also amazing for free improvisation that can make your playing sound so good even without thinking, that listeners may be thrilled an applaud --- really! Several pdf handouts will be provided. Second, Christmas Repertoire --- We'll focus on five special Christmas pieces: The only three actual Christmas shape-note hymns and some ideas for how to play them on hammered dulcimer or other instruments; and the two beautiful but repetitious melodies "We Three Kings" and "The First Noel" and how I have "solved the puzzles" of making them into intriguing dulcimer solos. There will be pdf handouts for all of these. Also, I'll send a list of my own best holiday repertoire and time will be given for attendees to request a discussion of how any particular one was made into a good showpiece.
