Timothy's Blog

Timothy's blog on dulcimers, music, nature and life!

I am a musician playing primarily hammered dulcimer and flute, and have produced 15 instrumental albums on Virginia, Nature, History, Celtic, Christmas, and other themes; self-styled and original in approach, with a strong respect for sources and meanings.

The making of the album Celebration of Centuries

The making of the album Celebration of Centuries

After Here on this Ridge was finished in 1997 I felt that it was time to move right on to another destination-themed album, and the obvious choice was our own local destination, Virginia’s ‘Historic Triangle:’ Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.

I started listing pieces I’d composed or arranged, and there were already plenty for a full album. A few quotes from great musicians about the performer's relationship with the music

A few quotes from great musicians about the performer's relationship with the music

Although these three quotes are all from Classical performers, I think they apply to any genre of music and indeed to many roles in life!

Trio StringWind's September 11 and 13, 2001

Trio StringWind's September 11 and 13, 2001

On September 11 of every year my thoughts go back to our Trio StringWind: Phil Skeens, Ardie Boggs, and myself.

An article in a local magazine about my music

An article in a local magazine about my music

I usually write my own material in these blogs, but recently Linda Landreth Phelps wrote an article about my life and music for the magazine Williamsburg Next Door Neighbors, and I think she did an admirable job, so... here's her article!

The making of our album Here on this Ridge

The making of our album Here on this Ridge

This will be my longest post about my albums --- and it’s perhaps the most trimmed-back!  Here on this Ridge was clearly the big turning point in my music-making.

In 1994 the holiday album Incarnation showed me I could successfully produce recordings of my own music, so I moved right into production of a general-themed CD called Wayfaring Stranger .  The instruments and the Celtic and hiking material could sort of be called themes, but it was mostly just a music CD for listening.
